Duck-faced Lacewing (Spoonwing)

One of the first insects appearing after the rains.

Spoonwings (Nemoptera aegyptiaca) share a close resemblance to threadwing antlions in appearance. The lacewing is easy recognizable due to their unique enlarged hind wings.

It is unknown what the functions of the long hind wings are, some suggest it is used for courting display behaviour when enticing a mate, or to look larger in appearance as an anti-predator adaptation.

These insects are pollen and nectar feeders. The proboscises are long and adapted for reaching into the deep corollas of flowers..
