A hot and dry October is now behind us and as I write this the rumblings of thunder can be heard in the distance.
This is always an exciting time of the year as we anticipate the first significant downpours and the accompanying relief with downgrading of the veld fire risk. Temperature ranges in this reporting month peaked at 39 degrees Celsius with a low of 12 degrees Celsius. Rainfall was recorded at 20 mm.
The electric fence infrastructure remains in good condition, there were minor damages through antelope, buffalo, and giraffe, these were identified and repaired. We have subsequently purchased a consignment of Y-standards, which we will be installing over time to replace the existing droppers. This will further strengthen the structure.
Malaria sprays were eventually completed in the first week of October. Progress in other areas was limited in this reporting period. This was as a result of a combination of factors, most notably staff taking leave and manpower shortages. We did however manage to target the prickly pear again in this month. In total, 136 plants were treated; these were all on the Argyle property. This work will continue in November and beyond as visibility and rainfall dictates.
The water reticulation infrastructure was a notable problem area in this month. No fewer than nine main line leaks were identified and repaired in the camp area. In addition, elephant damage at Bird Hide as well as Elephant Pan Hide had the available labour under some pressure to effect repairs.
The exercise to eradicate the Mexican Poppy in Vuka Ingwe continued on a lesser scale during October, this again will continue as opportunities arise.
A continued reminder to all Users to please advise me, the Gate, or Reception of any sightings of Indian Mynah birds. The specific location and number of birds will be very useful so that they can be immediately destroyed.
